Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justine Muturi has fired back at President William Ruto after the head of state suggested he was “fairly incompetent” in handling legal matters related to the establishment of a Waqf Endowment Fund.
Muturi clarified that under the Waqf Act No. 8 of 2022, there is no provision for a Muslim Endowment Fund, emphasizing that Waqf is a religious, charitable, or benevolent endowment specifically for Muslims and is managed by the Waqf Commission.
His response came after Ruto’s comments during an Iftar dinner at State House, Nairobi, where the president remarked that Muturi had struggled with legal matters concerning Waqf during his tenure as Attorney General. “I had a problem with the AG who was there before—he was fairly incompetent. But now, I have a very competent lady in the position, and I can assure you that the issues of Waqf will be sorted out within months,” Ruto said.
The remarks mark the first time Ruto has directly attacked Muturi, who has recently criticized the government over issues such as abductions. The president assured the Muslim community that, under the current Attorney General, these long-standing legal concerns would soon be resolved.
