A 29-year-old house help has been arrested after allegedly stealing Ksh2.2 million from her employer’s home in Nairobi and fleeing.
According to a statement from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the suspect was tracked down in Malava, Kakamega County, following coordinated efforts by detectives from the DCI Nairobi Regional Headquarters and the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau.
“Now in custody at Capitol Hill Police Station, the house help is undergoing processing as she awaits her day in court,” read the statement from DCI.
The incident happened on March 16, 2025, when the employer left the house help at home to attend to personal errands. Later that day, a security guard at the estate contacted the employer, informing them that the house help had been seen leaving with a large carrier bag. When questioned, she claimed she was delivering an item for her boss.
However, when the employer tried calling her, her phone was switched off. Rushing back home, the employer discovered that Ksh2.2 million, which had been stored in the bedroom, was missing. It was at that moment that it became clear the house help had vanished without a trace.
Detectives launched a thorough investigation, tracking the suspect’s movements across multiple counties. After days of pursuit, officers arrested her in Malava, Kakamega County.
She later led the detectives to different locations where portions of the stolen money had been hidden. A total of Ksh1.5 million was recovered, with Ksh700,000 found in her grandmother’s house in Kapsoi, Vihiga County, and Ksh800,000 retrieved from her rented house in South B, Fuata Nyayo, Nairobi. Additionally, officers recovered three gold chain links from her home in Kipkaren, Uasin Gishu County, allegedly purchased with the stolen money.
The suspect is currently being held at the Capitol Hill Police Station and is expected to be arraigned in court, where she will face charges related to theft and fraudulent acquisition of property.
