The government is preparing for a major crackdown to regulate betting, gaming, and gambling operations across the country, Principal Secretary for Interior Dr. Raymond Omollo has announced.
“We are working on cleaning that space. We want to rein in rogue businessmen and women who want to take advantage of our youth to get them hooked into betting. Actually, those who are hooked to betting, there’s no difference between them and those who are hooked to drugs and substance abuse. This is a matter that even the President has taken note of and he has given us guidance on what must be done,” PS Omollo stated.
In a related move, the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has issued a directive to all local media houses, instructing them to scale down and moderate the promotion of betting, gaming, lottery, and gambling activities within the next 14 days.
The Authority cautioned that once this period elapses, it will launch a crackdown on media platforms that fail to comply with the new guidelines.
According to CA, any media outlet that exceeds the approved limits for betting promotion will face serious legal consequences, including the potential revocation of their operating license
