A third-year university student was killed following a violent clash between fishermen over fishing grounds near Lake Victoria’s Kisaka Beach in Suba North, Homa Bay County.
The student, identified as Dancun Otenga from Meru University, had joined a fishing expedition at Lela Beach when conflict erupted between fishermen from Lela and Kisaka beaches. The dispute stemmed from accusations that Lela fishermen had encroached on Kisaka’s designated fish breeding zone.
Otenga, who was part of the Lela fishing group, was attacked during the altercation.
According to Homa Bay Town Assistant Chief Salim Nyauke, the student was assaulted with stones and other crude weapons while inside a boat. He lost consciousness and later drowned.
His body was recovered on Wednesday, three days after the incident, following an extensive search by local fishermen.
Otenga’s family, led by his mother Milliecent Otenga, is calling on the county security agencies to expedite investigations and ensure those responsible for the attack are brought to justice.
