Former Migori Governor Okoth Obado has told the court that he ended his relationship with university student Sharon Otieno due to “inconsistencies,” clarifying that her pregnancy was not the reason for the breakup.
The former County boss is a suspect in the murder of Sharon, a university student whose lifeless body was found in a thicket on September 4, 2018. The deceased was expecting a baby, who was also killed as its mother suffered stab wounds on her stomach.
Testifying for the second consecutive day, Obado described how the relationship began amicably but deteriorated over time.
“We started as friends, but then came the inconsistencies,” he said. “I told her I wanted to be responsible, especially since she was carrying my child. I wanted her to be comfortable.”
Despite the end of the relationship, Obado claimed he continued to offer both emotional and financial support.
“Even after we broke up, I still gave her money to support her and the baby she was expecting,” he told the court. “I made it clear that I was okay with her having my child. The pregnancy wasn’t the reason we parted ways.”
He further stated that he had plans to help Sharon become financially independent, including assisting her with housing.
“I was looking for land to build her a house — I just wanted to help her settle, considering she was carrying my child,” he said.
Obado also testified that Sharon had expressed a desire to move out of her mother’s home and into a rental in Homa Bay, a move he facilitated.
“She wanted to relocate to a rental house in Homa Bay, and I helped make that happen,” he said, adding that he was willing to invest in her future.
“I was okay spending Ksh.3.5 million on her. It was a reasonable proposal. Initially, she had hoped to get a house in Nairobi or Kisumu.”
