Kapseret Member of Parliament Oscar Sudi has stirred controversy by claiming that he financially supported former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua during the 2022 general election campaign period.
Speaking on Tuesday, April 22, Sudi accused Gachagua of misleading the public by claiming he self-funded campaign activities on behalf of President William Ruto. According to the outspoken UDA legislator, Gachagua lacked the financial resources at the time and was supported by others within the coalition.
“Rigathi Gachagua knows how much money I gave him to campaign. He goes around lying to people that he funded the campaigns. Let’s be honest, Gachagua didn’t even have a single cent,” Sudi stated.
While Sudi did not specify the amount he claims to have contributed, his remarks have further fuelled ongoing tensions within the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
He also dismissed assertions that Gachagua was selected as Ruto’s running mate due to his financial strength and grassroots mobilization skills.
“We chose Gachagua for strategic reasons and because we felt he had the seniority. Initially, the preferred candidate for Deputy President was Ndindi Nyoro, but we feared that people would say he was too young and that we might misuse him,” said Sudi.
He added, “So, we settled on Gachagua due to his age, but it turns out he came with many issues.”
Sudi’s comments add to growing speculation about internal rifts within the Kenya Kwanza coalition, especially amid rising political jostling ahead of the next election cycle.
