The Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee has summoned Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) Managing Director Philip Mainga to explain the 19-year delay in settling Sh21.9 million owed to retirees.
The committee also directed State Department of Transport Principal Secretary Mohammed Daghar to appear before the House team to address concerns over the non-payment of 270 former employees since 2006.
According to the Auditor General’s report on the Accounts of the National Government for the Financial Year 2023/2024, a total of Sh21,950,404 in unclaimed Kenya Railways retirees’ benefits has remained in the State Department of Transport’s account at the Central Bank of Kenya for several years. The report further notes that the amount lacks supporting documentation, such as a comprehensive list of retirees or beneficiaries and the amounts due to them.
“Further, the State Department did not explain reasons why the role of paying Kenya Railways retirees was transferred to them,” reads the report in part.
