The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has launched an investigation into the violent scenes that disrupted the FKF Premier League match between Shabana FC and Gor Mahia at Gusii Stadium.
In a statement released on Sunday, May 4, FKF confirmed that dozens of fans were injured during the chaos, which forced the match to be temporarily abandoned. A total of 72 individuals were treated for injuries at various hospitals in Kisii County.
“We have received confirmed reports from Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital, RAM Hospital, Hema Hospital, Christamarianne Hospital, and the police, indicating that 72 people received medical attention. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported as of this evening,” the statement read.
The federation condemned the violence, reiterating its commitment to maintaining safety and order at all football venues.
“FKF strongly condemns all forms of violence in our stadiums. Football must unite communities, not endanger lives. The safety and well-being of fans, players, and officials remain a top priority,” said FKF President Hussein Mohammed.
The federation further noted that it is collaborating with law enforcement agencies to establish the root cause of the violence and promised to take firm disciplinary action based on the findings.
“We are working closely with the relevant authorities to determine the circumstances surrounding the unrest. Once investigations are complete, appropriate sanctions will be imposed,” the statement added.
FKF also urged the public and media to avoid spreading unverified information, especially false reports of fatalities.
The violence erupted in the stands during the match, sparking stone-throwing and a stampede that resulted in multiple injuries. Despite the disruption, the game resumed under heavy security, with Gor Mahia securing a 1-0 win.
