Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i has assured residents of the Gusii region that he will soon unveil his political plans, hinting at a potential presidential bid in the 2027 general election.
Addressing thousands of supporters during a series of stopovers along the Kisii-Sotik Road, Matiang’i said he is currently engaging with citizens and leaders nationwide before making any formal declaration.
“I thank you for giving me the green light to consult with other leaders. When the right time comes, I will return and tell you what’s next,” he said to cheering crowds at Nyansiongo Market, a stronghold in his political base.
This marks Matiang’i’s first public tour of the Gusii region since returning from the United States, amid mounting speculation about his 2027 ambitions. His homecoming drew massive turnouts in Kisii and Nyamira counties, reflecting growing momentum behind his potential candidacy.
While he stopped short of officially announcing a presidential run, Matiang’i acknowledged the pressure from local leaders and residents urging him to seek the country’s top seat.
“The time will come, and I will sit down with you so that we agree, as a people, on the way forward,” he said.
The former CS is believed to be in consultations with prominent political figures, including Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, fueling speculation of a broader coalition.
Speaking in Keroka on May 2, Matiang’i emphasized unity within the Gusii community and called for collective action.
“Let us move forward together and do all that gives praise to our Father in heaven,” he told supporters.
Local political leaders across party lines have rallied behind him. Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo urged the community to fully support Matiang’i, saying he had been granted the mandate to lead and consult widely ahead of 2027.
“We have given him the authority to go and prepare,” Nyaribo said.
Lawmakers allied to both President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga echoed similar sentiments, pointing to a potential realignment of regional political loyalties.
“As a community, we have decided Matiang’i will unite us because we’ve been ridiculed for far too long,” said North Mugirango MP Joash Nyamoko (UDA), speaking in Chepilat.
Kitutu Masaba MP Clive Gisairo (ODM) encouraged locals to register as voters and support Matiang’i, citing his exemplary leadership record.
Kitutu Chache South MP Antony Kibagendi (ODM) also backed Matiang’i’s unifying message, urging residents to rally behind him in the lead-up to the 2027 elections.
Other leaders who pledged their support included Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka, UDA-nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba, and former West Mugirango MP Vincent Kemosi.
Matiang’i began his day-long tour at Kijauri in Nyansiongo and proceeded to hold mini-rallies in Keroka, Keumbu Market, Kisii Town, and Kemera in Nyamira. He spent the night at his Simbauti residence.
