Paris, France – Kenyan middle-distance superstar Faith Kipyegon came agonizingly close to making history on the track on Thursday night, falling just six seconds short of breaking the mythical 4-minute mile barrier for women.
Competing at the prestigious Diamond League meet in Paris, Kipyegon clocked 4 minutes 06.42 seconds, missing the historic milestone but still cementing her dominance as one of the greatest middle-distance runners of all time.
Had she succeeded, the two-time Olympic gold medalist would have become the first woman in history to run a mile in under four minutes, a feat long considered the final frontier in women’s middle-distance running.
“I came here to push my limits, and I gave it everything. The dream is still alive,” Kipyegon told World Athletics after the race.
The 4-minute mile has been broken by men since 1954, but no woman has yet crossed that barrier despite advances in training and competition. Kipyegon, who already holds the women’s world record in the mile (4:07.64) and 1500m (3:49.11), improved her own mile time but fell just short of rewriting history again.
