Isiolo Governor Abdi Ibrahim Guyo has been impeached by the County Assembly, with an overwhelming majority of 16 out of 18 MCAs voting in favor of his removal from office. The motion, which was passed on Thursday, now heads to the Senate for further consideration.
No member of the assembly opposed the motion, while two MCAs were absent during the vote. The impeachment comes after weeks of intense debate, public participation, and legal consultations held across the county’s ten wards.
According to Article 181 of the Constitution and Section 33 of the County Governments Act, the resolution must now be forwarded to the Senate, which holds the authority to uphold or overturn the impeachment.
The Speaker of the Isiolo County Assembly is expected to transmit the resolution to the Senate Speaker within days.
If the Senate upholds the decision, Abdi Guyo will become the latest county boss to be removed from office under Kenya’s devolution framework.
While the specific grounds for Governor Guyo’s impeachment were not immediately disclosed in the County Assembly’s official communication, sources close to the proceedings cited alleged mismanagement, abuse of office, and disregard for public input.
Guyo, who has had a long career in Nairobi and Isiolo politics, now faces the possibility of being permanently removed unless the Senate clears him.
If the Senate votes to confirm the impeachment, Deputy Governor James Lowasa is likely to assume the role of Acting Governor, pending a by-election or permanent confirmation. Previous impeachments, such as that of former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu, have followed a similar process.
