WhatsApp will no longer support a range of older iPhones and Android smartphones, as the Meta-owned messaging app updates its system requirements to enhance performance and security.

The update, originally scheduled for May 5, was postponed to give users more time to prepare. Now, WhatsApp will require iOS 15.1 or newer for iPhones and Android 5.1 (Lollipop) or newer for Android devices. Any phones running older versions will lose access to the app starting in June.

❌ iPhones That Will No Longer Support WhatsApp

If your iPhone cannot update to iOS 15.1, WhatsApp will stop working. Affected models include:

  • iPhone 5s
  • iPhone 6
  • iPhone 6 Plus

⚠️ Important Note: Devices like the iPhone 6s, 6s Plus, and iPhone SE (1st Gen) will continue to support WhatsApp, as they can still run iOS 15.8.4 — the latest version compatible with them.

❌ Android Phones Losing WhatsApp Support

Phones running Android 5.0 (or lower) are also losing compatibility. This includes popular legacy models such as:

  • Samsung Galaxy S3
  • HTC One X
  • Sony Xperia Z

Due to the fragmented nature of Android devices, compatibility varies by brand and model. To check your Android version, go to:
Settings > About Phone > Software Information

🛑 Why WhatsApp Is Ending Support for These Devices

WhatsApp frequently updates its requirements to:

  • Improve security and encryption
  • Support new features like HD video calls and emojis
  • Ensure smooth performance on supported devices

Older devices often lack the hardware and software to support these capabilities, leading to a compromised user experience.

✅ What You Can Do If Your Device Is Affected

If WhatsApp is ending support for your phone, here are your options:

🔄 1. Upgrade Your Device

To continue using WhatsApp, switch to a device that supports at least:

  • iOS 15.1+ for iPhones
  • Android 5.1+ for Androids

Budget options include the iPhone SE (2nd or 3rd Gen) or affordable mid-range Android phones like Samsung A-series or Xiaomi Redmi models.

🔧 2. Update Your Operating System

If your device is capable of upgrading to a supported OS version (like the iPhone 6s or SE 1st Gen), update it via:

  • iPhone: Settings > General > Software Update
  • Android: Settings > System > Software Update

💬 3. Switch to Other Messaging Apps

Apps like Telegram and Signal may still support your older device. Check your app store for compatibility.

💾 4. Backup Your Chats

Before losing access, back up your WhatsApp chats to keep your history:

  • iPhone: Settings > Chats > Chat Backup > Back Up Now (via iCloud)
  • Android: Settings > Chats > Chat Backup > Google Drive

This allows you to restore conversations on a new device later.

📊 How Many Users Will Be Affected?

According to Apple’s data from 2024, only 5% of iPhones globally still use iOS 15 or earlier, meaning the update will have minimal impact in most regions. However, in areas with slower smartphone turnover, the changes could cause disruption for some users.

For more details, visit the official WhatsApp support page or check your device’s compatibility via the App Store or Google Play Store.
