Kenya Railways has announced the resumption of Madaraka Express passenger services from Mombasa to Nairobi, a day after the sudden cancellation of Sunday night’s train left hundreds of passengers stranded.
In a statement released on Monday morning, the railway operator said the train would depart from Mombasa Terminus at 8 a.m., with all passengers who had valid tickets for July 6 allowed to board.
“Tickets dated 6th July, 2025, will be deemed valid for boarding and travel,” read part of the statement.
“We have worked on a mechanism to transport all affected passengers.”
The cancellation, which occurred late on Sunday night, was attributed to an unspecified technical hitch. The affected 10 p.m. train was scheduled to ferry passengers from Mombasa to Nairobi.
The incident caused frustration among travelers, many of whom had no alternative transport late at night.
Erlier, hundreds of youths traveling from Diani were blocked by police at the Dongo Kundu Bypass on Sunday. The group, which had just attended the Summer Tides Festival, was allegedly accused of planning to join Saba Saba protests in Nairobi.
Kenya Railways has since apologized for the disruption and promised to improve communication with customers in future incidents.
“We regret the inconvenience caused and thank all passengers for their patience,” the statement concluded
