Nairobi– July 19, 2025: Nairobi’s central business district was gridlocked after George Ruto, son of President William Ruto, launched his Ksh14 million luxury matatu named “Mood.”

The event held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) featured a youth concert, prayers, and the anointing of the matatu. After the unveiling, Mood paraded through the city streets, creating a standstill in traffic across key routes like Moi Avenue and Kenyatta Avenue.

Hundreds Flock KICC for Matatu Culture Celebration

The launch attracted hundreds of enthusiastic youths, signaling a vibrant return of Kenya’s urban matatu culture, which blends music, fashion, and transport into a unique cultural identity.

After the concert, the flashy matatu cruised through the CBD, escorted by supporters and fans.

Chaos as Mood Hits the Streets

The appearance of Mood in the CBD caused major disruptions and traffic jams that lasted hours. Concerned citizens took to social media to warn others:

“CBD is a crime scene. Goons have taken over. No police in sight at the KICC. Stay alert!” — Concerned Nairobi resident on Twitter (X)

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has yet to release an official statement regarding the event’s traffic impact, raising questions about event licensing and public safety.

What Makes Mood Stand Out?

The Ksh14 million matatu features a futuristic passenger experience uncommon in Nairobi’s PSV sector:

  • Custom bucket seats with charging ports
  • Fully air-conditioned interior
  • Solar power system
  • Push-to-start ignition
  • DJ decks & LED screens
  • CCTV surveillance & GPS tracking

George Ruto’s Growing Matatu Empire

George Ruto, through his growing fleet which includes the popular Manifest (also called Moneyfest), is cementing himself as a major player in Nairobi’s high-end PSV sector. His vehicles are known for flamboyance, youth appeal, and premium pricing.

Public Debate: Glitz vs. Struggle

While some citizens hailed Mood as a celebration of innovation, others criticized the event as tone-deaf given Kenya’s ongoing cost of living crisis.

Still, proponents argue this showcases Kenyan creativity and entrepreneurship, especially among youth.

What’s Next for Mood?

Mood is set to begin regular operations along the CBD–Kikuyu route, with premium fare pricing due to its deluxe features.
