A group of teachers from Agoro Sare High School in Homa Bay County are under investigation by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) after a video of them dancing enthusiastically during a Cultural Day celebration went viral on social media, sparking a nationwide debate.
Teachers Go Viral for Dance Moves
In the video widely shared on TikTok and X (formerly Twitter), male and female teachers are seen dancing together as students cheer them on. Female teachers are seen wining their waists while dancing with male colleagues, much to the delight of the student audience.
The scene, initially seen as a heartwarming moment of cultural engagement, has since escalated into a disciplinary concern, prompting swift action from the education authorities.
TSC Investigates for Code Violation
According to sources at the Teachers Service Commission, a formal inquiry is underway to determine whether the teachers breached the TSC Code of Conduct and Ethics. The commission is assessing whether the dance was appropriate for a school setting or if it compromised the professionalism expected of educators.
TSC is mandated under the TSC Act to uphold ethical behavior among teachers across the country. Actions deemed inappropriate in public institutions can attract disciplinary measures, including suspension or dismissal. You can read more about the TSC guidelines on Kenya Law’s official website.
“Teachers are role models, and while we encourage cultural expression, boundaries must be respected,” a TSC official told Nation.africa anonymously.
Public Reactions Divided
The viral video has divided opinion on Kenyan social media. Some users defended the teachers, praising them for participating in school activities and building rapport with students. Others expressed concern that the performance may have crossed professional lines, especially given the presence of minors.
A user on Sauce.co.ke’s Facebook page wrote:
“We need to humanize our teachers. They are allowed to have fun too.”
On the flip side, others questioned whether such dancing sends the right message to students in an academic institution. This echoes similar recent controversies, such as the viral dance of a principal in Murang’a.
What Next for the Teachers?
As of now, no official disciplinary actions have been announced. TSC has urged the public to allow the commission to complete its internal investigations. Agoro Sare High School has not released an official statement, but staff have been advised to refrain from commenting publicly until the probe concludes.
