Nairobi, Kenya – Friday, August 15, 2025 – Mediamax-owned K24 TV has officially clarified that it remains operational, debunking widespread social media claims that it has been shut down after 17 years on air.

The statement came after several posts circulated on Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) alleging the station’s closure and job losses. K24 flagged the claims as fake news, urging Kenyans to verify information via its official website and verified social media pages.

Fake Posts Spark Public Concern

Screenshots shared online suggested that the station had abruptly ceased operations, allegedly leaving hundreds of employees jobless. The rumours quickly spread, causing anxiety among media industry followers.

In response, K24 published a clear rebuttal, labelling the viral posts as false and misleading.

Mediamax Confirms Restructuring, Not Closure

While dismissing the shutdown narrative, Mediamax Network Limited — which owns K24 TV, Milele FM, and People Daily — acknowledged it has issued a 30-day redundancy notice to employees.

In an internal memo, CEO Ken Ngaruiya explained that the restructuring aims to align operations with the rapidly changing media landscape, citing:

  • Digital transformation and innovation demands
  • Shifting client needs
  • Reduced business volumes and a shrinking advertiser base
  • Challenging macroeconomic conditions
  • Government regulations affecting media operations

“This strategic reorganisation will enhance efficiency and competitiveness,” Ngaruiya stated, adding that some positions will be abolished to optimise costs.

The Bigger Picture in Kenya’s Media Industry

The announcement follows a wave of restructuring moves in Kenya’s media sector as outlets grapple with revenue drops, digital disruption, and changing audience behaviour.
