Kampala, Uganda – October 1, 2025 – Two Kenyan activists, Bob Njagi and Nicholas Oyoo, have gone missing after being allegedly abducted by armed men while accompanying opposition leader Bobi Wine on his campaign trail.
Witnesses said the incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon at a petrol station in Kireka, near Kampala. Four unidentified armed men, traveling in a grey van with a woman in the front seat, reportedly forced the pair into the vehicle before speeding off. Their phones were immediately switched off.
Bobi Wine Condemns Abduction
Bobi Wine, the National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate seeking to unseat President Yoweri Museveni in the 2026 elections, condemned the abduction.
“We strongly condemn the abduction by armed operatives of Kenyan activists and human rights defenders Bob Njagi and Nicholas Ayoo. The two were picked up mafia-style this afternoon and driven to an unknown destination!” Wine wrote on social media.
He accused the Ugandan regime of targeting the activists simply for expressing solidarity with his campaign.
How Events Unfolded
Njagi, the Free Kenya Movement chairman, had been captured on video the previous day actively engaging in Wine’s campaign in Kamuli District, Eastern Uganda. Alongside Oyoo, the pair had joined NUP leaders traversing Buyende and Kamuli on Tuesday.
On Wednesday, while repairing their car at a petrol station, witnesses said four gunmen emerged and abducted Njagi and Oyoo. A third Kenyan who was present was briefly detained but later released.
Silence from Authorities
Friends of the activists said they had driven from Kenya on Monday with two Ugandan companions. They later parted ways in Kampala. By Wednesday evening, the pair’s whereabouts remained unknown.
Neither Kenyan officials nor the Ugandan government had issued a formal statement by the time of reporting.
Growing Concern Over Human Rights
The incident has sparked fears over the safety of foreign activists operating in Uganda’s tense political climate. Human rights groups are already demanding the immediate release of the two Kenyans.
