Police in Migori County are investigating the brutal killing of Mary Mongare, a 48-year-old M-Pesa operator who was shot dead during a robbery in Migori Town on Thursday night.
According to police reports, Mongare was attacked shortly after closing her shop at around 9 p.m. on October 23, 2025, moments after depositing KSh500,000 received from a customer.
Attack Along Migori–Kisii Highway
Mongare, accompanied by her daughter, boarded a motorcycle and alighted at Sala area along the Migori–Kisii highway before beginning their short walk home.
It was at that point that two armed assailants, whose faces were covered, confronted them and demanded their belongings.
When Mongare’s daughter screamed and ran for help, the robbers opened fire, hitting Mongare three times — in the right ankle, left wrist, and chin — before escaping with her handbag, which contained an M-Pesa phone and a flask.
Victim Succumbs to Injuries
The businesswoman was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she died while undergoing treatment. Her body was later moved to the Migori County mortuary for a postmortem examination.
Police say no arrests have been made yet, but investigations are underway.
“We are following crucial leads and are determined to bring the culprits to justice,” said one of the detectives attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
Rising Insecurity in Migori
The killing adds to a string of violent robberies in Migori Town and surrounding areas, prompting growing concern among residents and leaders over rising insecurity.
Police have since intensified night patrols and deployed a team from the DCI to assist local officers in tracking down the suspects.
Residents have urged authorities to increase surveillance, especially in areas where M-Pesa operators and traders often handle large cash transactions.
