Kenya’s Affordable Housing Programme has earned international recognition for its contribution to sustainable urbanisation and improved access to decent housing across the country.
The State Department for Housing and Urban Development was honoured with the Certified Bronze Gigacity Award 2025 by the World Broadband Association (WBBA) during a ceremony held in Cape Town, South Africa.
Housing Principal Secretary Charles Hinga received the award on behalf of the Kenyan government and was also individually recognised for his role in advancing smart city development and promoting the growth of megacities in Kenya.
According to the WBBA, gigacities enhance local business productivity by improving digital connectivity, facilitating access to public services, and supporting smart technologies — all key ingredients for modern urban development.
The global recognition positions Kenya among countries actively investing in digitally driven and inclusive urban growth.
“The Affordable Housing Programme is not just about providing homes; it’s about creating jobs and building vibrant, connected communities,” said PS Hinga. “Through this initiative, thousands of young people, women, and Jua Kali artisans are gaining meaningful employment.”
Currently, the Affordable Housing Programme has more than 214,000 housing units under construction across all 47 counties, reflecting the government’s commitment to addressing the national housing deficit while integrating technology into urban planning.
