A housemaid has been arrested for allegedly stealing a safe containing cash, a firearm, and crucial documents from her employer’s home in Nairobi’s upscale Kileleshwa area.
Police identified the suspect as the domestic worker accused of breaking into her employer’s bedroom on November 3, 2025, and making away with a safe containing Sh348,000, title deeds, foreign currency, and a Glock 19 pistol loaded with two magazines carrying 44 rounds of ammunition.
Detective Simon Ihaji of Kilimani Police Station told the Kibera Magistrate’s Court that the safe held 1,950 USD, €600, Sh5,000, and other valuables. None of the stolen items were recovered during a raid in Kawangware, where the suspect was tracked down after disappearing following the incident.
Investigators believe the suspect may have had accomplices, as she had worked for the family for over two years and vanished immediately after the theft. According to police, the employer and his family were away when the alleged robbery took place.
Security footage reportedly captured the househelp carrying the safe out of the home concealed inside a carton. Guards on duty said they did not raise alarm because they assumed she had been sent on an errand.
The homeowner, a licensed firearm holder, discovered the safe missing upon returning home.
Principal Magistrate Margaret Murage ordered the suspect to remain in custody until November 24, 2025, saying:
“The respondent will be detained at Kilimani Police Station for seven days only, until the 24th of this month. On this date, I expect a charge sheet to be ready.”
Police say efforts to recover the missing firearm, cash, and documents are ongoing.
