Nairobi, Kenya — November 25, 2025 — Polling stations have officially opened across 22 electoral areas in the country as Kenyans turn out to vote in the 2025 by-elections. The exercise spans 18 counties, though early indicators suggest turnout could be lower than in a general election.
Initially, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) had scheduled by-elections in 24 areas, but the number dropped after the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) secured two uncontested wins.
Two UDA Candidates Elected Unopposed
According to Gazette Notice No. 15732, dated October 29, 2025, the IEBC confirmed that Tembelio Ward in Uasin Gishu County and Metkei Ward in Elgeyo Marakwet County would not hold competitive elections.
This is because only UDA candidates were validly nominated, granting the party automatic victories.
You can read more about IEBC regulations on the commission’s official website.
