British heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua has been injured in a road accident in Nigeria that left two people dead, according to local police authorities.
The crash occurred on the Ogun–Lagos State Expressway, a busy highway linking Ogun State to Lagos. Police confirmed that five adult men were involved in the accident, two of whom died at the scene, while two others escaped unhurt.
In a statement, police said Joshua was rescued alive and sustained minor injuries. He was immediately taken to hospital for medical attention and was later reported to be in stable condition.
“Anthony Joshua was rescued alive and sustained minor injuries. He was taken for medical attention,” police officials said, adding that he was “fine.”
Preliminary investigations indicate that the vehicle Joshua was travelling in collided with a stationary truck during an overtaking manoeuvre. Authorities suspect the car may have been over the speed limit at the time of the crash. Joshua was seated in the back of the vehicle when the accident occurred.
The identities of the two victims who lost their lives have not yet been released as investigations continue.
Joshua, 36, is a former unified world heavyweight champion and has strong family ties to Nigeria. His roots trace back to Sagamu, a town in Ogun State, where he has often spoken of his heritage and connection to the country.
Police say further details will be provided once investigations into the exact cause of the crash are completed.
