The once-popular “Samia Suluhu” themed matatu operating on Nairobi’s CBD–Outering Route 23 has been withdrawn for a repaint following public backlash linking its artwork to Tanzania’s post-election violence.
The vehicle, owned by ROG Sacco, sparked heated debate after critics accused its operators of glorifying a government widely blamed for the deadly unrest that followed Tanzania’s disputed October 29 election. President Samia Suluhu was declared the winner in a process marred by allegations of irregularities and significant loss of life, although official casualty figures have not been released.
In the aftermath of the declaration, protests erupted across several regions, with demonstrators torching businesses and public infrastructure. Security forces responded with force, leading to reports of unarmed civilians — including women and children — being shot dead, triggering widespread regional concern.
Amid mounting pressure, the matatu’s operators have opted to replace the presidential portrait with a new theme celebrating Young Africans SC (Yanga), one of Tanzania’s most popular football clubs.
Meanwhile, global attention continues to intensify. The European Parliament is currently debating whether to suspend aid to Tanzania, while activists across the continent are urging the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate the president’s alleged role in the violence.
ROG Sacco hopes the new artwork will calm tensions and restore normalcy for its passengers.
