DCI detectives in Kitui Central have arrested four suspected fraudsters accused of posing as senior Kenya Prisons Service officers and defrauding a businessman of Sh105,000 through a fake vegetable supply tender.
The suspects — Clement Wachira, Andrew Kimani, Ann Waweru, and Rehema Makandi — allegedly convinced the victim that they held top positions at Kitui GK Prison and could secure him a lucrative contract to supply fresh produce. The businessman reportedly paid the money as a “processing fee” before realising he had been conned.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, officers had been trailing the group for several weeks. On Friday, the detectives moved in and arrested the suspects while they were inside a black Toyota Harrier.
A search of the vehicle recovered:
- 37 forged Kenya Prisons Service tender approval documents
- 2 fake Kenya Prisons Service staff ID cards
- 8 mobile phones
- 6 national ID cards belonging to different people
The suspects are currently in police custody and are expected to be charged with impersonation, forgery, and obtaining money by false pretence.
Investigators believe the gang may have targeted additional traders using the same “vegetable tender” scam and are urging any other victims to come forward as inquiries continue.
