James Opande has become a trending topic on Kenyan social media following a scandal involving the alleged recording and circulation of an explicit video of a woman without her consent.
Opande, who has been identified online as a US-based medical practitioner—with some sources describing him as a Certified Nursing Assistant—is accused of secretly recording a woman in a compromising situation and sharing the footage on social media platforms. In the clip, Opande is allegedly heard making remarks about the woman’s dressing, triggering widespread public outrage.
The incident has drawn sharp condemnation from women’s rights activists and members of the public, with calls for legal action against Opande. Reports indicate that Nairobi-based government official Geoffrey Mosiria issued a “red notice” alert in response to the matter, aimed at preventing Opande from leaving the country as investigations commenced.
Opande has since denied responsibility for the video’s circulation, claiming his phone was hacked and that the footage was meant for private use. He further stated on social media that he had already travelled back to the United States before the video surfaced online, suggesting he is currently outside Kenya.
The woman at the centre of the controversy has also come forward, alleging betrayal of trust. She claims Opande had promised to marry her and has since recorded a statement with the police as she seeks justice over the incident.
