Twenty-three-year-old Marion Naipei has revealed that her life took a dramatic turn after a viral video showed her in a vulnerable and intoxicated state at a Nairobi nightclub, leading to the withdrawal of financial support from her benefactor.
Speaking after the incident, Naipei said the man she referred to as her “blesser” stopped supporting her financially and ceased paying her rent following the widespread circulation of the clip. The video, which spread rapidly online, sparked intense public debate and scrutiny.
Naipei alleges that the footage was secretly recorded and shared without her consent by James Opande (also known as James Apande), a US-based Kenyan who was visiting the country at the time. She has since filed a formal complaint against him at the Buruburu Police Station, accusing him of non-consensual recording and distribution of the video.
The matter has attracted the attention of the Ministry of Gender, Culture and Children Services. Cabinet Secretary Hanna Wendot Cheptumo condemned the circulation of the video, describing it as a violation of human dignity, privacy and human rights, and urged the public to stop sharing the footage.
In an emotional response, Naipei apologised to her family and to herself, saying she was taken advantage of during a moment of vulnerability. She maintained that the incident has had serious personal and financial consequences, even as investigations into the case continue.
