The National Construction Authority (NCA) has provided fresh details on the building collapse that occurred early Wednesday morning along Kirinyaga Road in Nairobi.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, February 11, the Authority disclosed that the incident happened during foundation works at the construction site. According to the NCA, a retaining wall that had been put up to support an earlier excavation failed, triggering the collapse.
The temporary structure, which was functioning as shoring to hold back surrounding soil, gave way, leading to part of the excavation caving in.
“The project is a proposed commercial development that was under construction at the time of the incident which took place during foundation works at the site,” the NCA said in its statement.
The Authority further confirmed that the development was intended to rise up to 10 floors once completed.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the collapse are ongoing as authorities assess compliance with construction standards and safety regulations.
