The death toll from the devastating floods that struck Kenya last Friday has risen to 62, with Nairobi recording the highest number of fatalities, authorities have confirmed.
According to the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, the victims include 46 men, eight women, and eight children who have lost their lives since heavy rains triggered widespread flooding across the country.
Nairobi Worst Hit
Nairobi has reported 33 deaths, making it the most affected area, followed by the Eastern Region with 17 fatalities and the Rift Valley with seven deaths.
Meanwhile, the Nyanza Region and the Coast Region have each recorded two deaths, while Central Kenya reported one fatality.
Rescue Operations Ongoing
Authorities say the casualty numbers could still rise as rescue teams continue to search affected areas and assess the full extent of the destruction.
“The number of casualties and affected areas has increased as rescue teams continue search operations,” the ministry said in a statement.
Thousands Displaced
The floods, which began on March 6, have displaced thousands of families across 17 counties, including Kisumu and Narok County.
Officials estimate that 12,338 homes have either been swept away or submerged by floodwaters, leaving many residents without shelter.
The government has urged residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant as heavy rains continue to pound parts of the country.
