At least ten people have died and five others injured following a tragic road accident at Kariandusi near Gilgil along the Nairobi–Nakuru highway.
The Saturday morning crash involved a speeding 14-seater matatu that lost control before ramming into a stalled trailer, according to police.
Fatal Collision
Authorities say the impact of the crash was severe, killing ten passengers on the spot and leaving several others with injuries. The injured were rushed to nearby health facilities for treatment.
Winston Mwakio, the Gilgil Sub-County Police Commander, confirmed the incident, noting that the trailer had developed mechanical problems and stalled on the road shortly before the accident.
Cause of the Accident
Mwakio explained that the matatu driver was unable to avoid the stalled trailer in time, leading to the deadly collision.
Preliminary investigations indicate that speeding may have contributed to the crash, although authorities say further inquiries are ongoing to establish the exact circumstances.
Rising Road Safety Concerns
The accident adds to growing concerns over road safety on the busy Nairobi–Nakuru highway, a key transport corridor that has witnessed multiple fatal crashes in recent years.
Police have urged motorists to exercise caution, adhere to speed limits, and remain vigilant, especially when approaching stalled vehicles or accident scenes.
Authorities are continuing investigations into the incident.
