In the aftermath of Kenya’s deadly 2007–2008 post-election violence, 2007–2008 Kenyan post-election violence, Anthony Njoroge Mbuthia survived one of the country’s most horrifying attacks and has since rebuilt his life into a story of resilience and hope.

Survived the Kiambaa Church Attack at Age 10

On January 1, 2008, chaos erupted in Kiambaa Village near Eldoret when attackers stormed a church where families had sought refuge following disputed presidential election results.

The assailants set fire to the Kenya Assemblies of God church in Kiambaa, killing 17 people — mostly women and children — in one of the most remembered incidents of the violence.

Others were reportedly hacked, shot with arrows, or attacked outside the church.

Anthony, who was only 10 years old at the time, survived the inferno but suffered severe third-degree burns covering more than 40 percent of his body.

Years of Treatment and Nearly 70 Surgeries

After spending a year receiving treatment in Kenya, Anthony was later transferred to Shriners Hospital for Children in Sacramento, California.

There, he underwent years of reconstructive treatment and close to 70 surgeries aimed at helping him recover from the life-threatening injuries.

Following approximately five years of medical care in the United States, Anthony and his family were granted political asylum.

Building a New Life in America

Now 27 years old, Anthony has transformed his painful past into motivation and purpose.

One of only four survivors from the Kiambaa church attack, he has become a content creator and entrepreneur in the United States.

He is the founder of Picha Fine Productions, a media company specializing in photography and videography services across the country.

Message of Forgiveness and Hope

Despite enduring one of Kenya’s darkest tragedies, Anthony has chosen to focus on healing, forgiveness, and resilience.

Through interviews and podcasts, he shares his journey of survival and recovery, inspiring many with his determination to rebuild his life after unimaginable trauma.

Away from work, Anthony enjoys traveling, listening to podcasts, and spending time with friends.
