Offices belonging to the United Democratic Alliance in Wote, Makueni County, were set ablaze on Monday as protests over rising fuel prices intensified across the country.
Videos circulating online showed flames and thick smoke billowing from the recently painted party offices as angry protesters demonstrated against the latest increase in fuel prices. Demonstrators reportedly lit a fire outside the premises before the blaze spread to parts of the building.
The rowdy crowd also vandalised the offices, smashing windows and damaging doors during the chaos. It remains unclear whether any property was stolen during the incident, although the offices appeared ransacked after the attack.
The fire was later contained before it could completely destroy the premises.
Police officers were deployed to the scene and have since launched investigations into the incident. Authorities confirmed that no arrests had been made by Monday afternoon, but warned that action would be taken against those involved in the destruction of property.
The incident comes amid growing nationwide anger over the recent fuel price adjustments announced by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority. The protests have already disrupted transport services in several parts of the country, especially in Nairobi, where matatu operators staged a strike that left thousands stranded.
Protest organisers argue that the high fuel prices are increasing the cost of living by pushing up transport fares, food prices, and electricity costs. Opposition to the fuel hikes has continued to gain momentum, with demonstrators calling for government intervention and reforms in the energy sector.
