The National Police Service (NPS) has intensified security operations across Nairobi by setting up additional checkpoints on major roads as Kenyans commemorate Saba Saba.
The enhanced security measures are aimed at maintaining law and order during the annual commemoration, with police saying they are intended to prevent criminal activity and protect public safety.
Checkpoints Mounted on Major Roads
Dozens of security checkpoints have been established on key roads leading into and around the Nairobi Central Business District, including areas surrounding Parliament and State House.
Police officers are stopping and inspecting motor vehicles, motorcycles and pedestrians as part of the operation.
Some road users have, however, complained of delays, inconvenience and harassment during the heightened security checks.
In addition to the checkpoints, security personnel have been deployed in larger numbers to conduct patrols across the city.
Police Cite Previous Incidents
In a statement issued on Monday, NPS spokesperson Michael Muchiri said the measures were informed by previous Saba Saba commemorations in which some demonstrations turned violent, resulting in breaches of the peace and disruption of business activities.
“The National Police Service wishes to inform all members of the public that, in light of past experience during the Saba Saba commemoration, some members of the public have caused breaches of the peace, thereby interfering with the normal conduct of business for those not participating in the demonstrations,” the statement said.
Muchiri said the checkpoints are intended to regulate both pedestrian and vehicular movement while helping police prevent disorder and safeguard members of the public.
Security Increased Beyond Nairobi
Police presence has also been heightened in several towns outside Nairobi, including Kitengela, Mlolongo, Rongai, Githurai and along Waiyaki Way.
Authorities have also restricted access to some parts of Nairobi’s city centre, with several areas designated as no-go zones as security agencies monitor the situation throughout the day.
