A tragic incident unfolded on Wednesday in Raila village, Langata constituency, as a university student took his own life after losing his school fees to a betting scheme.
Brian Ongwae, 22, a student at the Catholic University of East Africa (CUEA), had staked Ksh. 15,000, intended for his fees, in a bid to secure more funds through betting. However, his aspirations were shattered when the endeavor failed to yield any returns.
According to residents, Ongwae appeared visibly distressed throughout the day following the unsuccessful bet placed on Tuesday evening. Reports indicate that he secluded himself within his residence, engaging in conversations with an unidentified individual.
Concerned neighbors, sensing something amiss, went to his rented house only to find Ongwae’s lifeless body hanging from the rooftop.
Chief George Mukuria of Muguimoini area confirmed that law enforcement officers arrived at the scene on Wednesday evening to conduct an assessment of the premises. Subsequently, the deceased’s body was transferred to the City Mortuary pending an autopsy.
Ongwae left behind a heartfelt note addressed to his mother, urging her to remain strong.
Chief Mukuria expressed his belief that Ongwae’s demise was fueled by depression stemming from recurrent financial losses in betting activities. He issued a solemn plea to young people, urging them to refrain from such practices to avert similar tragedies in the future.
