Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa has entered the ongoing discourse surrounding the proposal to eliminate the cap on presidential term limits.
The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) legislator asserted that Kenya Kwanza, the ruling alliance, could maintain its grip on power for a minimum of 50 years without the need to abolish presidential term limits.
Barasa diverged from leaders advocating for the removal of the constitutional term limit, asserting that even with the existing framework, the ruling alliance could govern for several decades.
During a morning interview on K24 TV, Barasa emphasized his belief that the Kenya Kwanza government could endure for half a century without altering the 10-year presidential term cap.
“We can achieve this objective without necessarily abolishing the term limit cap,” he clarified.
According to Barasa, sustaining the Kenya Kwanza government’s continuity entails ensuring that President William Ruto’s successor emerges from within the ruling alliance.
“We will ensure that once President Ruto completes his constitutionally mandated 10-year term, his successor will build upon the progress made during his tenure,” he explained.
Barasa likened Kenya Kwanza’s aspirations to the long-standing reigns of parties like Tanzania’s Chama Cha Mapinduzi and South Africa’s ANC, which have maintained power for decades after their founders’ departures.
His remarks came in response to propositions advocating for the elimination of presidential term limits to enable President Ruto to govern indefinitely.
