Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) board Chairperson Irungu Nyakera has announced that he will not attend President William Ruto’s upcoming tour of the Mt Kenya region next week.

In a statement on Sunday, March 30, Nyakera explained that he is currently studying at Oxford University in the United Kingdom and will not be available for the visit.

“I will not be present during the President’s upcoming visit to Mt Kenya as I am still in school at Oxford University,” said Nyakera.

At the same time, he cautioned Mt Kenya residents against showing hostility toward President Ruto during his visit, urging them to prioritize development over politics.

“In the last election, Mt Kenya voted for development and development, as we all know, comes through the Office of the President. When he visits next week, let our focus be on that development, not on the politics,” said Nyakera.

He further referenced historical events, warning of the consequences of political divisions.

“History has taught us harsh lessons. When Mzee Jomo Kenyatta visited Kisumu with Jaramogi Oginga Odinga and was received with hostility, development in that region came to a halt for decades,” he added.

Nyakera also noted that Mt Kenya suffered during Uhuru Kenyatta’s final term due to prioritizing politics over development.
