Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah encountered a hostile reception on Thursday, April 3, as he was heckled by an irate crowd during a public event attended by President William Ruto.
Ichung’wah was among the dignitaries accompanying the president at the launch of the Last Mile Connectivity project in Ol Kalou Town, as Ruto continued his development tour across Mt Kenya.
While Nyandarua residents responded positively to President Ruto’s address, tensions escalated when the microphone was handed to the Kikuyu Member of Parliament.
Videos seen by Kenyans.co.ke captured the crowd expressing their discontent, interrupting Ichung’wah’s speech with loud jeers and whistles, forcing him to pause momentarily.
Refusing to back down, Ichung’wah responded defiantly, stating, “Let me tell you, no one can shout me down. I cannot be intimidated.” However, his attempt to regain control through greetings was met with even louder heckling.
In a bid to pacify the crowd, Ichung’wah shifted focus to the Affordable Housing project, urging that job opportunities be allocated to local youth. Despite this, the audience continued to express their displeasure, ultimately forcing the MP to cut his speech short.
Before passing the microphone back, Ichung’wah took a parting shot, declaring, “I want to tell you, President Ruto, that here in Ol Kalou and the whole of Nyandarua, no one can intimidate me.”
The Majority Leader was not the only leader to face resistance. Nyandarua Woman Representative Gitau Faith Wairimu also endured jeers while addressing the gathering.
Amid the commotion, President Ruto announced various development projects for Nyandarua, including the construction of eight markets aimed at providing farmers with reliable trading spaces. He assured residents that procurement was underway, with some projects, such as those in Ndaragua and Mile Kumi, already 60% complete.
