Four police officers have been charged in connection with the 2017 murder of baby Pendo and 39 other individuals who were killed during protests.
The charges were approved by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), who reviewed the case files, leading to the prosecution of the officers while dropping charges against others involved in the incident.
Among those facing prosecution is John Chengo Masha, who has been charged with serious offenses, including murder and crimes against humanity under the International Crimes Act. Masha is also facing a separate charge of rape.
Prosecutors allege that Masha failed to take appropriate action to prevent officers under his command from entering the homes of victims, where they reportedly beat residents with clubs and raped at least six women.
Another officer, Lina Kogei, has been charged with murder in relation to the events of August 12, 2017. It is also alleged that some officers involved in the operation extorted money from the victims.
This marks the first time police officers have been charged under the International Crimes Act, a significant development in the ongoing efforts to seek justice for victims of police brutality and human rights violations.
