President William Ruto has appointed renowned legal scholar Prof. Makau Mutua as the Senior Advisor of Constitutional Affairs in the Executive Office of the President, marking a notable development in the ongoing political détente between the Kenya Kwanza administration and the Azimio la Umoja coalition.

In a statement released on Wednesday evening, President Ruto confirmed the appointment, lauding Prof. Mutua’s expertise and contributions to the legal field.

“I have appointed Prof Makau Mutua as the Senior Advisor of Constitutional Affairs in the Executive Office of the President. Prof Mutua brings a wealth of experience in legal, constitutional and human rights matters. Congratulations Prof Mutua,” the president announced.

Prof. Mutua, a long-time ally of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and a prominent figure in civil society, becomes one of the highest-profile individuals from the opposition ranks to be absorbed into the Kenya Kwanza administration as part of the broader bipartisan realignment.

His appointment is seen as a strategic move by President Ruto to bolster his administration’s credibility on legal and constitutional matters, especially amid ongoing debates over judicial reforms, devolution, and governance frameworks.
