Detectives in Kirinyaga County are investigating a burglary at ACK St. Matthew’s Mutithi Church, where a gang broke in, stole property, and even consumed altar wine and sacramental bread before fleeing the scene.
The break-in occurred on Sunday and was discovered by members of the church choir, who noticed that the keyboard was missing. According to Eliud Muriuki, the church’s vice chairman, the theft was first reported by the choir.
Police say the gang gained access to the building by cutting through the window grill. Once inside, they unlocked one of the church doors, which they later used as an exit route.
Adding to the church’s frustration, the burglary reportedly took place while a night guard was on duty. However, he is said to have been asleep and unaware that the church had been broken into.
Officers visited the church on Monday night and assured the congregation that investigations are underway. So far, no arrests have been made, and none of the stolen items have been recovered.
