A royal delegation from Eswatini has reportedly traveled to Nkandla, KwaZulu-Natal, in South Africa to initiate reconciliation talks following the sudden departure of Inkhosikati Nomcebo Zuma, the 22-year-old daughter of former President Jacob Zuma and the youngest wife of King Mswati III.
According to Swaziland News, Nomcebo left the royal palace citing emotional distress and dissatisfaction with the King’s polygamous lifestyle. Sources close to the situation claim she was overwhelmed by King Mswati’s prolonged absences and the complex dynamics of sharing a husband with 11 other wives.
Nomcebo’s marriage to King Mswati III, formalized in September 2024 during the culturally significant Umhlanga Reed Dance, was widely celebrated due to its political and cultural symbolism, uniting two powerful Southern African families. However, her recent decision to leave the palace (a move known in Eswatini tradition as Kwemuka) has sparked diplomatic urgency.
Under Eswatini’s Swazi custom, when a royal wife leaves, it becomes necessary for the husband’s family or representatives to initiate formal discussions with the woman’s relatives in a bid to reconcile and possibly bring her back. This is exactly what the royal delegation aims to achieve in Nkandla.
So far, neither the Zuma family nor Eswatini’s royal palace has issued an official statement regarding the developments.
