Former Teachers Service Commission (TSC) CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia has officially turned down her nomination to serve as the Chairperson of the Murang’a County Public Service Board, citing an international commitment that conflicts with the full-time nature of the county role.
In a letter dated June 25, 2025, and addressed to Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata, Dr. Macharia expressed gratitude for the nomination but revealed she had accepted an offer from an international organization, which would hinder her ability to serve effectively in the county post.
“I hereby thank you for nominating me… However, I decline the post as I have received another offer from an international body, which, in my opinion, could affect my performance in the said role,” wrote Dr. Macharia.
She also noted that she initially believed the Murang’a appointment would be part-time, only to later learn it required a full-time commitment, which she could not honor.
Governor Kang’ata’s nomination, which included Dr. Macharia alongside Dr. Louis Mwende Musikali, Johnson Kang’ethe Kinyua, and Dr. Brian Lishenga Makamu as board members, and Oscar Kimani Gathura as Secretary, had been announced ahead of a scheduled vetting session on Friday, June 27, 2025.
The decision by Macharia comes just days before her official exit from TSC on June 30, 2025, after serving as CEO since 2015. Her leadership at TSC was marked by sweeping reforms, teacher digitization, and the implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) rollout, which earned both praise and criticism across the education sector.
