A Kibera court has sentenced a man to death after he was found guilty of two counts of robbery with violence committed in Nairobi’s Kawangware area.
Isaac Khanga was convicted of robbing two individuals of mobile phones and cash during separate incidents that occurred on the night of November 3, 2024, around 11:00 PM, in the Madiaba area of Dagoretti Sub-county.
According to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP), Khanga, in the first incident, stole a Tecno smartphone valued at Ksh24,000 and Ksh30,000 in cash. Shortly afterward, he robbed a second victim of another mobile phone worth Ksh15,000.
The court established that in both robberies, Khanga threatened to use actual violence immediately before the thefts. He was said to have committed the crimes alongside unidentified accomplices who were not before the court.
While delivering her judgment, Principal Magistrate Christine Njagi noted that the death penalty remains legal in Kenya and has not been declared unconstitutional. She emphasized that the nature of the crime met the legal threshold for capital punishment.
Khanga, who was formally charged on November 15, 2024, received two death sentences, one for each count. However, the court ordered that one sentence be held in abeyance, in accordance with judicial guidelines.
