Moi University has announced an upcoming public auction that will see the sale of livestock, vehicle parts, and an official university vehicle in a bid to address ongoing financial challenges.

In a public notice signed by Vice Chancellor Prof. Kiplagat Kotut, the institution invited interested members of the public to view the items between Friday, June 20, and Monday, June 23, ahead of the auction scheduled for Tuesday, June 24, 2025, at 9:30 a.m.

“Moi University shall be selling the following items by public auction on Thursday, June 24, 2025, at the Main Campus Transport Department yard and farm yard at 9:30am,” the statement read.

According to the official notice, the items to be auctioned include:

  • 19 cows
  • 10 donkeys
  • 4 German Shepherd dogs
  • 3 used tyres
  • 1 Toyota Hilux vehicle

The pricing varies per item. Bulls and bull calves will range from Ksh7,000 to Ksh70,000, while each German Shepherd will go for Ksh40,000. Donkeys are priced between Ksh6,000 and Ksh15,000. The used tyres are tagged at Ksh12,000, and the Toyota Hilux is expected to fetch Ksh350,000.

The auction is part of broader measures Moi University is taking to address its persistent financial woes. The institution, which is among the public universities grappling with funding shortfalls, has in recent years laid off over 376 staff members due to budgetary constraints.
