Boniface Mwangi Kariuki, the hawker who was shot during Tuesday’s anti-government demonstrations, remains in critical condition at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after undergoing a second high-risk surgery.
Mwangi, who sustained life-threatening head injuries after being struck by a bullet, is currently fully dependent on life support.
Doctors performed a delicate operation on Tuesday to remove the bullet from his skull. However, lingering fragments posed an ongoing threat to his life, prompting a second surgery on Thursday to extract the remaining shards lodged deep in his head.
Following the operation, Mwangi was returned to the ICU, still clinging to life and reliant on machines to breathe.
His family has appealed to the government for justice, calling for accountability and prosecution of the police officers involved in the shooting.
“We just want justice. He was unarmed, working to make ends meet, and now he’s fighting for his life,” said a relative outside the hospital.
Mwangi’s case has intensified public outcry over police brutality during the protests, with human rights groups urging independent investigations and legal action against the officers responsible.
