The remains of celebrated Kenyan author and scholar Professor Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o have been cremated in Buford, Georgia, in accordance with his final wishes, his family has confirmed.
Ngũgĩ, a globally revered literary and political figure, passed away on May 28, 2025, at the age of 87 after a long battle with health complications, including kidney failure that required regular dialysis in his later years.
Cremation in Line With Ngũgĩ’s Final Wishes
In a statement released on June 1, 2025, and signed by his son Ndūcũ wa Ngũgĩ, the family revealed that the late author did not wish for a traditional burial ceremony.
“He wished instead to be remembered in spirit, through the ideals he stood for and the lives he touched,” the family said.
His son, Mukoma wa Ngũgĩ, also confirmed that the cremation had taken place, honoring the personal choice of a man whose work often challenged the status quo and championed cultural and political freedom.
Commemorative Events Planned in Kenya and the U.S.
While there will be no formal public burial, the family has announced that a series of memorial events will be held both in Kenya and the United States to celebrate Ngũgĩ’s life, legacy, and unparalleled contributions to African literature, decolonization, and language preservation.
These events will allow friends, fans, scholars, and fellow writers to reflect on the work and impact of a man considered by many to be one of Africa’s greatest literary minds.
