At least 200 families have been left homeless after a massive fire swept through the Kichinjio area of Kibra, destroying homes and small businesses. The blaze, which broke out on Wednesday evening, left behind widespread devastation.
Fortunately, no fatalities or injuries were reported, though the damage has forced many residents to spend the night in the cold, with most of their belongings reduced to ashes.
Eyewitnesses said emergency response efforts were hindered by narrow access roads, which prevented fire engines from reaching the heart of the densely populated settlement in time.
“We tried to fight the fire with water and sand, but it was too strong. The fire trucks couldn’t get in,” one resident told local reporters.
This tragedy comes just two weeks after a separate fire in the same constituency claimed eight lives and left dozens of others displaced, raising renewed concerns over fire safety and preparedness in Nairobi’s informal settlements.
Local leaders and humanitarian agencies have called for urgent shelter, food, and clothing support for the affected families, and for long-term solutions to improve infrastructure and emergency response access in the area.
