President William Ruto has donated Sh2 million to the grieving family of the late blogger Albert Ojwang’, who died under mysterious circumstances while in police custody. The President made the donation after calling Meshack Ojwang’, the father of the deceased, to express his condolences.
Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga also reached out to Meshack Ojwang’ via phone from abroad, offering his sympathy and support following Albert’s controversial death.
Albert Ojwang’, the only child of Mzee Ojwang’, died in Nairobi after being arrested from his rural home in Homa Bay on June 7, 2025. His death has sparked national outrage, with calls for justice and accountability mounting by the day.
The news of the presidential donation and Raila’s condolence call was made public by Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, who led other local leaders in visiting the Ojwang’ family at their rural home on June 16.
“The President called Mzee Ojwang’ personally and sent a donation of Sh2 million to support the family during this difficult time,” said Governor Wanga.
She also confirmed that Raila Odinga had spoken with the bereaved father from abroad:
“Raila also called Mzee Ojwang’ from abroad to offer his condolences.”
Governor Wanga emphasized the need for speedy investigations and prosecution:
“Justice must not be delayed. Those responsible for Albert’s death must be held accountable.”
Mzee Meshack Ojwang’ expressed deep appreciation for the support from both national leaders:
“I am grateful to both the President and Raila Odinga. Their support is invaluable to me and my family at this painful time.”
Albert’s death is under investigation by the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA), with several officers and civilians already in custody in connection with the incident.
