Nairobi, Kenya – Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat has officially stepped aside from his role amid mounting pressure and public outrage over the death of Albert Ojwang, a teacher who allegedly died after being assaulted while in police custody.
In a statement issued on June 16, 2025, Lagat described his decision as one made with “good and conscious thought” of the weight of his office and the need for impartial investigations.
“I have today opted to step aside… pending completion of investigations,” the statement read in part.
Lagat confirmed that his deputy will assume responsibilities until the investigations are concluded.
Death in Custody Sparks National Outcry
Ojwang, a teacher and blogger, died under mysterious circumstances after his arrest at Central Police Station, Nairobi. The case has since sparked public outrage and ignited calls for accountability within the National Police Service.

The Officer Commanding Station (OCS) at Central Police, Samson Talam, has already been arrested in connection with the case, with reports alleging CCTV tampering and custodial abuse.
Lagat Pledges Support for Investigations
While vacating office temporarily, Lagat pledged to fully support the ongoing probe, led by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA).
He also extended his condolences to the family of the late Ojwang and called for patience as the justice process unfolds.
“We must let justice take its full course,” he added.

Ongoing Investigations and Public Reactions
The investigation is expected to also scrutinize the roles of senior officers at the station and within the chain of command. Human rights groups have called for full transparency, citing an alarming rise in extrajudicial killings.
Public figures including former Chief Justice David Maraga, have blamed senior security officials, urging President William Ruto to ensure swift action is taken.
