A family getaway in Diani, Kwale County, turned into a heartbreaking tragedy after a two-and-a-half-year-old boy drowned in a swimming pool on Saturday, June 28.
According to police, the toddler had accompanied his mother for a weekend holiday and was staying at an apartment in the coastal resort town. The mother told authorities that she was preparing food around 1:00 p.m. when the boy wandered off unnoticed.
Moments later, she began searching for him—only to be met with the devastating sight of her son’s lifeless body floating in the pool.
The boy was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. His body has since been moved to the mortuary pending a postmortem.
Authorities say investigations into the incident are ongoing to determine the circumstances that led to the drowning, including potential issues of supervision and safety protocols at the apartment complex.
