NARC-Kenya party leader Martha Karua has formally declared her intention to vie for the presidency in the 2027 General Election, marking a bold political comeback and ruling out any possibility of serving as a running mate again.
Speaking to Kenyans in the United States on Saturday, July 12, 2025, during a meeting also attended by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Karua made it clear that her time as a deputy contender ended with the 2022 elections.
“In case you hadn’t known, I am vying for the presidency. I said I am done with running mate business, having finished that era in 2022,” Karua stated to applause.
The former Azimio la Umoja running mate reaffirmed her personal ambition to lead the country, but also demonstrated political maturity, saying she would support another candidate picked by the opposition coalition—as long as she is not required to play second fiddle.
“If in the unlikely event another person is chosen as a candidate, I will subordinate my ambitions and support without being a running mate because Kenya is bigger than anyone else,” Karua added.
